A Study on the Sexual Attitudes and Sexual Behaviors of College Students

Abstract
This study is a descriptive correlation study conducted in order to provide basic materials to develop educational programs which can offer practical help regarding the sexual consciousness of college students. Data were collected from a random sampling of first, second and third year students of a university in G metropolitan city from September 15 to 27, 2008 using a questionnaire. For this study, the instrument used for examining sexual consciousness was based on the instrument used by Ahn Hyun Jin (2003) and Lee Seung Il (2005) and revised and complemented by this researcher. A total of 200 responses were used for analysis. Collected data were verified with technical statistics using SPSS/PC (version 12.0) for t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson¡¯s correlation coefficient. The results of this study are as follows. 1) The mean of sexual attitude was 3.14 (¡¾0.79) and sexual behavior was 3.09 (¡¾1.20). While open sexual attitude and sexual behavior were found to be higher than their means. 2) The results of examining statistical characteristics of subjects according differences in their sexual consciousness showed no significant difference in all variables including sex, grade and residence types. 3) The results of investigating subjects¡¯ characteristics related to sex education and differences in their sexual consciousness depending on them showed no significant difference regarding location of sex education learning. Furthermore, students who received sex education showed higher sexual consciousness than those who had no sex education and it showed statistically significant differences (t=2.331). 4) Differences in sexual attitude by gender showed no significant differences in their opinions and environment of sex and in subscales of sexual behaviors, male students showed higher frequency in masturbation (F=-1.901) and premarital sex (F=-2.150) than female students and it showed statistically significant differences. 5) In differences of sexual attitudes by subjects¡¯ grade, the first students were in a more open sexual environment than the third graders (F=5.408). In subscales of sexual behaviors, the second year students felt a sense of guilt after masturbation more than the first year student and the first students watched pornography more than second or third year student. Results showed statistically significant differences (F=6.953). 6) Opinions (t=1.713) and environment (t=2.361) of sex by subjects with and without sex education showed significant differences and subscale of sexual behaviors showed significant difference only in frequency of watching pornography (F=-2.687). 7) Relation between sexual attitude and sexual behaviors of subjects (r=-0.168, p=0.017) showed negative correlations that sexual behaviors were lowered as sexual attitudes became more progressive. Consequently, it was found that since college students who experienced sex education even once were open to sex but had a proper understanding of sexual behaviors. Lower graders students are more open to sex and showed frequent sexual behaviors. Multiple efforts by individual, home and society should be made to establish a proper sexual consciousness of college students through sex education suitable to the student¡¯s level.
